When Trauma Quietly Begins to Take Over

A dirt path through a field of yellow wildflowers leads to a small town and mountain in the background with partly cloudy skies.

Sexual abuse trauma rarely shows up all at once. More often, it appears through subtle but painful changes.

A teen who once felt joyful may suddenly withdraw. Sleep becomes difficult. School becomes harder to focus on. Parents may notice irritability, isolation, or sudden shifts in friendships or behavior.

Some teens begin avoiding people or places that once felt safe. Others struggle silently with anxiety, overwhelming fear, or self-harm.

For women who experienced sexual abuse earlier in life, trauma can quietly resurface in adulthood. It may appear in relationships, in difficulty trusting others, or in constant worry about protecting your own children.

Many women carry deep shame about asking for help, believing they simply have to live with what happened.

But trauma does not have to stay trapped in your body and mind.

There is a path toward healing.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

HOW HEALING HAPPENS

Through EMDR therapy, healing from sexual abuse does not require retelling every detail of what happened. Many clients find it deeply relieving to work through painful memories gently and at their own pace – until those memories no longer control daily life.

Sessions are offered virtually throughout Colorado in both English and Spanish.

    Therapy for Adolescents (12+)

Teens who have experienced sexual trauma often feel caught between wanting help and not wanting to talk about what happened. EMDR can be especially supportive because healing can happen even when words are difficult to find.

Through therapy, many teens begin sleeping more peacefully, reconnecting with friends and family, and gradually feeling more like themselves again.

    Therapy for Women and Mothers

Women who survived sexual abuse earlier in life often carry the weight of that trauma into adulthood. It can affect relationships, intimacy, trust, and parenting, sometimes in ways that are hard to name or trace back to their source.

EMDR offers a path forward without requiring you to revisit every detail of the past. Many women find that as healing progresses, they feel more present in their relationships, more grounded in their bodies, and more like themselves again.

Hi, I’m Emily

I’m Emily Murphy, a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker and trauma therapist serving clients throughout Colorado.

For over six years, I have specialized in evidence-based trauma treatment, including EMDR for sexual abuse. My work focuses on helping adolescents and women gently process painful experiences so they can move forward with greater peace and stability.

I believe healing happens when people are met with compassion and respect for their dignity. Trauma can affect every part of a person’s life—mind, body, and spirit—and therapy can be a place where those parts begin to reconnect and restore.

When trauma begins to release its grip, life starts to feel different.

Teens find themselves reconnecting with their families and friendships. School becomes easier to focus on and the constant tension in their body begins to soften.

Women who once felt trapped in fear or shame often begin to experience something new…peace.

They learn to trust themselves again, set healthy boundaries, and show up more fully in their relationships and families.

Healing does not erase the past. But it allows the past to stop controlling the present.

The pain you carry is not your fault, and it does not have to shape the rest of your life.

Through compassionate therapy and EMDR therapy in Denver, it is possible to move beyond survival mode and begin living with greater freedom, safety, and hope.
